No, it's not about cheese and cream („sir i vrhnje“). It's not that I don't like it, but I think that we are smart nation and we can mange just fine if they put cheese-and-cream prohibition. We'll have secret restaurants where we will consume cheese and cream, in which you'll be able to enter only with password. And we'll have mafia, led by our own cheese-and-cream Al Capone, who will produce illegally home made cheese and cream. And we'll have our own Elliot Fucking Untouchable Ness, who will fight bravely and incorruptibly against cheese and cream.
We can even make a movie. Staring...Goran Visnjic, let's say.
But there's something else that's bothering me...let's do some historic retrospective...
1102. Last king that had Croatian blood died. So we ran away to Hungarians, who promised to respect our history, laws...bla bla...and what happened?
We spent next 400ish years crying how we are poor enslaved, exploited...
1526. Hungary is also left without a king. And what do we do? Together with the Hungarians, we go to Austrians. Who promise to respect our history, laws and bla bla...and what happens? We spend next 400ish years crying how we are poor enslaved, exploited...
1918. Broadly hated Austrian and Hungarian empire is down. We finally find the strength to declare our independence. But even this time, we are not capable to do that on or own, so we join the Slovenians. But the worse part is just about to happen. After a month we join Yugoslavia and spend next 20ish years... not to repeat myself...
1990. Yugoslavia is down. The idea finally comes from our butts to our heads and we create our own country. Defend it in the f***ing war, and manage to keep it 15ish years.
2005. Our government is trying to push us in EU, which will respect our history, laws...
Jebemumater! (curse involving mother, person saying and a specific act). Is it only me who sees a pattern here? Did Ciceron made a huge mistake saying history is the teacher of life? Or you actually need to smart to learn something from the past?

I am director of the Universe, but still...everyone's opinion is appreciated :D
Most of the people are quite sensitive about EU topics. And majoritiy of your people think joining EU now would be rusing in! I tend to agree. We should enjoy our independance for few more years and develop economy and all other areas. Othervise, EU will eat us up!
These are the main arguments used to convince European countries to join the EU:
Not entering the EU means isolation from the rest of the world. (You won’t have any political influence world affairs)
Not entering the EU means your country won’t have the chance to develop to levels similar to Germany, France, etc.
If you enter the EU you will receive fabulous amounts of money to build infrastructures that otherwise would take 50 years to build.
These are the main arguments I use to convince people to reject the EU:
Not entering the EU means your country has more sovereignty and more negotiation power than if you decide joining of an institution like the EU, that unfortunately is not famous for being a very transparent and democratic institution. And even if it was transparent and democratic, don’t forget would be part of a group of about 350 million people, which means your interests would be subject to the interests of the majority.
Not entering the EU means you have at least the chance to be like Switzerland, Denmark and other small countries who decided not to join the EU as full members but still are considered more developed than Germany or France. And believe me, joining the EU is not the miracle solution for inequalities of wealth in your country. Strangely, it’s exactly the opposite. Your country’s economy will grow, but inequalities will also grow with it.
First of all “there are no free lunches”. All amounts of money “given” by the EU are offered in exchange for some type of direct or indirect benefit for those who end up “donating” the money. And the EU forces you to negotiate and accept a “whole package” of demands and benefits in exchange for subsidies before you even enter the EU, which means you cannot negotiate anything using a casuistic approach.
As an example of the logic above: the EU gives you money to build highways (oh, they are so nice to us!). On the other hand, that infrastructure opens up a market of opportunities to sell BMW’s and BMW parts in your country. In the end, everybody gains from this deal, but in the long term some gain more than others… But still, Germans like to think poorer European countries live at their expenses…
hahahaha, fantastic!
I thought I`m the only @-er thinking that EU sucks :)
My opinion is: let EU build highways (and other infrastructure), because they are not building them to help you, but because they are building a market for them (as ivan noticed); and then vote not to join EU on a referendum. Does anyone in Croatia really thinks that Croatia (or Serbia, situation is the same) will play a major role in the EU? Fuck EU - for their conservative thinking, we will always be just a stronghold to the "bad islam".
Blah, I know I will vote against when the time comes in SCG...
cheers,
Nino
"Fuck EU - for their conservative thinking, we will always be just a stronghold to the "bad islam". " - as we have always been. Although we have more than few different versions of history, if I recall it good, Croatia was always a stronghold between east and west...
You are all missing the bigger picture. Human natures first instinct is self-interest, and no matter what we do that won't change. So Germany will allow money for the infrastucture and every action will take place for the betterment of the initiator. However, this is how it has always been...the EU is trying to UNITE the countries to create one common interest...by creating a common interest then every action will be the best for the UNION. We cannot argue and complain about these actions, even if it is going to fail. The EU might be the worst idea for our future...it could be our greatest downfall...but what it is trying to create is our greatest ally....unity.
